Referring to the incident of attacking a police station in Patgram, Lalmonirhat and snatching two accused who were sentenced in a mobile court, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said, ‘What is the point of elections in this situation? What will the election be? For this, the environment for elections must be created first.’
The Jamaat Ameer made this comment in response to a question from journalists at Nilphamari’s Syedpur Airport on Friday afternoon. Stating that the questions of reforms have come to create the environment for elections, he added, ‘We hope that if there are effective reforms in basic issues, then Alhamdulillah there will be a good election. And there is no room for “if”. Reforms must be made and good elections must be held.’
In response to another question from journalists regarding ‘mob-terrorism’, Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said, ‘Mobs have always been in Bangladesh. It started in ’72 and it is continuing till now. But we do not want this mob, we are vehemently opposed to mobs. You will see that no Jamaat-e-Islami worker or supporter is involved in these mobs.’
Regarding controlling mob-terrorism, he said, ‘Those who have people, they have to be controlled. After that, it is the state’s responsibility. It is not enough to just give everything (responsibility) to the state. People from different parties are involved, the basic responsibility of that party is to first handle its own workers. After that, the state will fulfill its responsibility as well.’
Assuring that the mob will be eradicated, the Jamaat Amir said, ‘There will be only one justice, justice will not be handed over to anyone. Justice will remain in the hands of the court, God willing.’
After talking to journalists, Jamaat Amir Shafiqur Rahman left for Rangpur to join the party’s public meeting in Rangpur.
